Competition Results

The following results do not appear on the normal Fixtures & Results pages:

Club Championship (Scratch): Mark Dodds
Club Championship (Handicap): Brian Grant (Ian Campbell Trophy)

Player of the Year: Brian Grant
MacIver Cup: Neil Macleod

Tally Trophy: Elna Lawrie

It has been agreed in Committee to change the date of the Closing Match from Sat 20th October to Sat 27th October.
This is in order to allow anyone who may have been away during the School Holidays to take part and also to coincide with closing of shop for the season.

This year the format for the Closing Match will be Portuguese One Club played in teams of 3 or 4. A good fun way to end the season.

The ‘Competition’ will be followed by one of Ann’s fine buffets and immediately after that, the Annual Prize-giving.

It is hoped we can have a large turn out for this event.

An entry list will be posted on the notice board soon.

Three-person Charity Event

The above event was held on 7 September 2012. Eight teams took part and the event raised a sum of £660 for MacMillan Cancer Support.

Thanks to Peter Saggers for organising the day on behalf of the Club and to those members who supported the event by entering teams, donating raffle prizes and contributing generously to the raffle and the auction in aid of the charity.

Player of the Year (21st August 2012)

As the season moves towards its climax the Player of the Year competition appears to have a clear leader. Neil Macleod has accumulated 35 points - mostly by his performances in the monthly medals - 7 points clear of his nearest rival, Brian Grant, on 28 points. However,  with the September medal still to be played and the results of the Club Championship and Ian Campbell Trophy still to be decided there are still a number of players with more than just a mathematical chance of gaining the much coveted title. Current standings: Neil Macleod 35, Brian Grant 28, Angus Macleod 24, Peter Meredith 22, John D MacDonald 22, Brian Wilson 20, Peter Mitchell 15, George Rollo 13, Mark Dodd 12, Harry Rae 7, Francis Potter 7, Julian Duggan 6, Rob Heffer 1, Bruce Jeffrey 1.

The Gents’ Championship (21st August 2012)

The final 18 holes is on Saturday 25th August with the first players tee-ing off at 12:30. Players will tee off in leader board order (just like the Pros). Both the scratch and handicap sections are down to the wire with Harry Rae and Mark Dodd neck and neck for the scratch. Three others are within two shots of one another for the Ian Campbell Trophy in the handicap section. It is hoped that a number of non participating members will come along to watch which promises to be an exciting finish to the Competition played in this format for the first time. The current standings in the two competitions after the completion of three rounds are as follows:

Club Championship Gross
Mark Dodd 198
Harry Rae 202
Angus Macleod 222
Brian Grant 228
Neil Macleod 228
Peter Mitchell 238

Brian Wilson 274

Ian Campbell Trophy Net

Angus Macleod 190
Brian Grant 190
Neil Macleod 195

The Walk On Open

by George Rollo

A good entry of around 45 players of mixed age and abilities from as far south as Suffolk and as far north as Laide. The weather was again kind, though the earlier starters had the best of the conditions. The increasing wind late afternoon played havoc with the tail-enders and this was reflected in the scores. Despite that, the day was enjoyed by most who took part, especially Lenny who won a partial refund of his generous sponsorship.Once again a huge thank you to Lenny Crossley for his continued support of this event. To the unflappable Mike Powley who got me out of real self-induced fix early doors and to Sylvia Macdonald for doing the all important checking and recording of the scores. Also to the staff who stayed on after ‘hours’ to continue dispensing sustenance both solid & liquid. My congratulations to the winners and the nearly winners.

Leading Lady Carol Turnbull (Gairloch) 41 points!!!
Runner-up Irene Moncur (Dunkeld  &Birnam) 29 points
Leading Gent Lenny Crossley (Strathpeffer) 39 points
Runner-up Neil MacLeod (Gairloch) 38 points
Third place Brian Grant (Gairloch) 37 points
Leading Junior James Mitchell (Halesworth) 36 points
Runner-up Roddie MacKay (Blackpool Park) 26 points

First of all a huge thank you to all who helped out on the day and to those who helped in preparation with the catering, admin and out on the course. Running this competition would not be possible without you.

Highland Gathering

The club ran a Target Golf stall at the Gairloch Highland Gathering on Saturday 30 June. We took in £100 at our stall. Our thanks go to John & Eileen Beck, Pauline Hodges, Ron & Georgie Lamond, Mike & Shirley Powley, Martin & Jane Rowe for helping to run the stall and, of course, to George, Rhona and Mark for getting the area ready for the target golf competition.

The results were:

  • 2nd: Raymond Gault with 125 points. He wins lunch for 2 at the club.

Junior Golf

Two of our junior golfers participated in the primary schools golf competition at Muir of Ord on Wednesday 13th June - Emily Morrison 9 yrs and Max Conway 10 yrs. The two youngsters acquitted themselves extremely well, with Emily excelling herself by taking the medal for 3rd place. There were 27 participants in all, from clubs throughout Ross-shire. Both children have been regular attenders at the Monday Club Golf sessions. Well done to them and coaching staff.

More Holes in One

What a year this is turning out to be! The following players have all recorded holes in one in the last few weeks:

Hole in One (May 7th 2012)

Responding to your request to report a ' hole in one '. It occurred on Monday May 7th on the 9th hole using a six iron.
My name is David Duggan and I am a member at Royal Dornoch Golf club. It was witnessed by my playing companions Sarah and Oliver Irvine also members of Royal Dornoch and a Mr Trevor Wilson a member of Dumfries County Golf Club.

Club and Kirk Cups (May 6th 2012)

The club's annual 36 Hole competition took place on Sunday May 6th. A beautiful day and a good turnout of 13 players competing for the two cups (10 for the Club Cup and 3 for the Kirk Cup). The standard of play was extremely high with three players returning net scores of 60 on the first 18 holes and scores of 59 and 61 on the second 18 holes. The aggregate winner of the Club Cup was Brian Grant with a total of 121 only beating Angus Macleod by a countback on the final 9 holes. The Kirk Cup winner was John D MacDonald with an aggregate score of 137.

To the great delight of all taking part we had the excitement of a Hole-in-one at the 7th on the first 18. A group consisting of Mark Dodd, Peter Meredith and Tony Hamilton tee'd off, with both Peter and Mark hitting shots that covered the flag. The hole is blind from the tee but as they walked to the green Tony announced that there was only one ball, the other must be in the hole. Both Peter and Mark simultaneously said that they hoped it wasn't theirs! It turned out to be Mark's, which was just as well as he carries insurance for just such an eventuality. Word spread around the course like wildfire and everybody's lunch break was enhanced by a beverage from the bar - setting us all up for the second 18!

Congratulations to Mark - the 12th hole-in-one of his playing career!

Death of Honorary Life President (18th April 2012)

It is with much regret I inform you of the passing yesterday of our Honorary Life President Mr James D Fraser, locally known as Jimmy "Lordie". Jimmy was 93 and had served our Club for many years in a number of capacities. He was Captain from 1949 until 1955. He was elected President in 1956 and held that office until 1968. He then served a second term as Captain from 1969 until 1971. He was elevated to the position of Honorary Life President in November 1982. To those who knew him he will always be remembered as a staunch supporter of our Club with an unblinkered view of where the Club should be going, often in the face of strong opposition. He will also be remembered by some of our present Captain's age group as a patient and innovative Junior coach.

As a mark of respect our Club flag will fly at half mast until after the funeral.

Gairloch Golf Club appoints a new Head Greenkeeper

We are pleased to announce that we have appointed a new Head Greenkeeper, Mark Dodd. Mark who hails from Northumberland, was Head Greenkeeper at Alnmouth Village GC, a 9 hole links course on the Northumberland coast. Mark will be relocating to the village with his partner Abby and we wish them well for the future. Mark commenced work with us on Monday 20th February.

Valentines Theme Social Evening - Saturday 11th February

What laughs! A great fun evening enjoyed by a near capacity crowd of members and non-members alike. The Clubhouse, appropriately decked out with hearts, ribbons, balloons and other assorted paraphernalia, with ‘background’ music from the 60s/70s, although not often heard because of the general hub-bub.

The evening got off to a brain-teasing start with an “easy” 15 question general knowledge quiz. So easy the winners had the near perfect score of 11/15!! The quiz was followed after a short interval spent castigating the Quiz Master and re-charging glasses, by a “couples” game. To cut a long story short, it involved people with labels on their foreheads, wandering around trying to find their ‘partners’. Much cheating ensued, before Pete Mitchell and Angus Neil MacLeod announced themselves winners.

After attacking the finger buffet, we came to the highlight of the evening, namely the dreaded Mr & Mrs! We were fortunate indeed to have four happily married couples “volunteer” for the ordeal. Rigorous and often very searching questioning ensued. Many answers were not always in tune with their partners, but always to the great amusement of the crowd. After a nail-biting tie-break David and Fiona Price emerged as those who had done most rehearsing beforehand and were crowned Love Birds 2012. In celebration, David is rushing Fiona off for a romantic weekend in Mallaig or thereabouts. At time of printing it is not known if any of the runners-up have so far filed for divorce!

Time flew and before we knew it, it was time for the ‘Grand Raffle’ - a myriad of prizes kindly donated. Various scents and soaps won by the Guys and most of their stuff won by the Gals.

My sincere thanks go to Anne Crawford and Carol Turnbull, who decorated the Lounge and organised the late night food. Thanks also to the volunteers for selling raffle tickets and to Angus MacLeod for his ‘dispensing’ services and to others who pitched in. A special ‘thank you’ to all who turned up on the night and helped boost Club funds – we took in over £600.

We look forward to seeing you all again in the near future at our next “social evening”. Keep an eye on the Club website and Gairloch Times.

Work begins on new 8th Tee

Work has begun on construction of the new 8th Tee. Seen here is club president, Chris Powell, preparing the ground for the installation of a new Huxley mat. This work will bring back into regular use a tee from earlier days and will provide an interesting alternative to the current 8th tee which is also played at the 17th.

Valentine's Event

Saturday 11th February, 7:30pm - 60's/70's Valentines theme night, including a Mr & Mrs Quiz. We need four couples to volunteer to take part for fun on the night and there are Great Prizes to be won. Please contact Rhona Rollo on 01445 712671 or email: if you are willing to be contestants! If we don't get a response, we may have to pull names out of the hat on the night - be warned! There is no admittance fee, but a raffle prize would be gratefully received! In order to have some idea of numbers could you please let one of the following 'social sub-committee' members know if you hope to attend - Anne Crawford, Carol Turnbull, Jane Rowe or Rhona Rollo.

Bottle Bingo

The new Social Committee held a very successful Bottle Bingo on 7th January. £828.60 was raised on the night (less bar stock). A big THANK YOU must go to all members and friends who donated a huge array of bottles. We had so many prizes that we were able to run a very successful raffle, which contributed about £180 towards the total fund.
